The Paris of the Midwest

Panorama of the Detroit Riverfront

Detroit, the most populous city in the state of Michigan, is the main financial, business and cultural center of the region. The urban area of Detroit / Ann Arbor / Flint / Windsor is the largest metropolitan region in the world, located in more than one country. According to a 2010 United States Census the city had about 713,000 residents and was ranked as 18th largest in the country. The median age of the citizen was 31 years, and for every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males.

Below we present some interesting ideas for dating in Detroit.

The City of Culture

Detroit Jazz Fest receives $100,000 from Knight Foundation to support DJF's Jazz Planet

Detroit is well known for great clubs where live music rules. That's why it has the nickname Motown. The city hosts many world class live music events across whole metropolitan area. The biggest concerts are held in The Palace of Auburn Hills, DTE Energy Music and Theatre. In order to see Broadway performances you can go to the city's theater venue circuit. We can bravely call Detroit the city of theaters with Fox Theatre (5,174 seats), Music Hall (1,770 seats), the Gem Theatre (451 seats), Masonic Temple Theatre in the first place. On the contrary, if you would like, on your perfect date, to listen to the music at its best, you should definitely go to the Detroit Opera House or Orchestra Hall (which hosts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra).

The city had a considerable contribution to the music. Such stars as John Lee Hooker, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, and Eminem, to name just a few, come from here. Therefore it is not surprising that there are numerous, highly valued music events in the city, such as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival, and the Summer Jamz festival. If you like museums you will appreciate the fact that the most important of them are located in one place – Cultural Center Historic District (Midtown Detroit). Being in the area it is worth going to the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Detroit Science Center, Motown Historical Museum, or the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (and we did not list all of them!).

Nightlife and Entertainment

If we talk about entertainment, we cannot forget about Greektown (historic commercial and entertainment) which is one of the best places for unforgettable date while you feel like partying. But before wild fun you should eat something first. The local area offers a number of excellent restaurants serving cuisine from around the world including (yes, you guessed it!) Greek (Pegasus Taverna, The Golden Fleece, PizzaPapalis, and Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen Cafe). In the city, there is a large Arabic-speaking population – you can find plenty of restaurants serving middle-eastern delicious dishes around (Al-Ameer, Hamido, Ollie's Lebanese Cuisine).

Another large group are Poles, so if you feel like having bigos or pierogi (Polonia, Ivanhoe Cafe – Polish Yacht Club, People's Pierogi Collective) you will certainly not be disappointed. If you have eaten already it is time for fun. The city recently associated with recession mostly is coming back to life and attracts (often because of low rents) different kinds of artists. If you like jazz go to the Cliff Bell's or Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe. If you want to let off steam at a rock concert – go right to the Hard Rock Cafe. The center of nightclubs is Downtown. If you want to dance all night long you will find many clubs full of singles, where the best world-class DJs play. While in the area, visit LUNA or Commune. On the other hand, if you just want to talk over a mugful of good beer you should go to the The Emory, Foran's Grand Trunk Pub, or Woodbridge Pub. On the whole, dating in Detroit can be a lot of fun!
